Gastric outlet obstruction in a neonate because of Peutz-Jeghers syndrome
2012
Neonatal detection of Peutz-Jeghers syndrome is unusual with only 2 cases previously reported in the literature. We describe a neonate presenting with gastric outlet obstruction owing to 2 large Peutz-Jeghers polyps. The child's father and grandmother were known to have Peutz-Jeghers syndrome. On the ninth day of life, the infant underwent colonoscopy, abdominal exploration, and complete surgical resection of 3 polyps. The postoperative course was uneventful, and the patient was discharged home at the age of 3 weeks on full oral feeds. This is the first case report of inherited Peutz-Jeghers syndrome causing gastric outlet obstruction in a neonate.
Hypoproteinemia on the first day of life and adverse outcome in very preterm infants admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit
2012
International audience; OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the relationship between day-1 hypoproteinemia and severe adverse outcome (SAO) in very preterm infants admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study of all patients born from 24 to 31 weeks gestation and cared for in our NICU over an 8-year period. Infants were excluded if the serum protein value on the first day of life was not available. RESULT: A total of 913 patients were included. In all, 14.6% presented with SAO (death or severe neurological injury on cranial ultrasound). Hypoproteinemia (total protein level \textless40 g l(-1)) on day 1 of life occurred in 19.5 % of all patients. The …
Inhaled nitric oxide as a rescue therapy in a preterm neonate with severe pulmonary hypertension: a case report
2018
Abstract Background Inhaled nitric oxide (iNO) has been approved for the treatment of persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN) in term and near-term newborns. Its role in the management of persistent pulmonary hypertension in preterm infants is not clear. Although guidelines do not exist, some studies have shown that iNO could be used as a rescue therapy in preterm neonate with severe pulmonary hypertension. Case presentation We describe the case of a preterm neonate, born at 30 + 1 weeks of gestation, with hypoxic respiratory failure not responding to maximal conventional therapy. On the third day of life echocardiography showed severe pulmonary hypertension with right to le…
Hörscreening bei Neugeborenen. Vergleichende Untersuchungen und Kostenanalysen mit verschiedenen Geräten1
2000
BACKGROUND The necessity of screening examinations in newborns today cannot be denied. Up to now, it has only been achieved in a few countries to introduce a general hearing screening for newborns. METHODS We examined 100 newborns (200 ears) at their third day of life. All ears were evaluated with the TEOAE-screening-device ECHOSCREEN. In addition, we carried out BERA screening examinations with the ALGO PORTABLE or with the EVOFLASH on 100 of these 200 ears. As a reference method, we utilized TEOAE-examinations with the ILO-88 for all ears. RESULTS 4.5% of the 200 ears examined with the ECHOSCREEN were conspicuous due to accumulation of earwax problems. With the ALGO-system, none of the ea…
